If you are a Bulgarian citizen planning to work in Greece, it is important to know that the procedure is significantly simpler than for non-EU candidates.
As a European Union citizen, you can work in Greece without a work visa or special work permit. However, there are certain administrative steps that must be completed for your stay and work to be fully legal.
As a Bulgarian citizen, you can enter Greece with a valid ID card or passport. You can stay for up to 3 months without any registration. If you stay longer than 3 months, you need to register your residence.
Unlike candidates from Serbia, Bulgarian citizens do not apply for a visa, do not go to an embassy, and do not collect visa documentation. The employment process does not go through the visa system but through local administration in Greece.
To work in Greece you need an AFM (tax identification number). It is required for signing an employment contract, employment registration, and opening a bank account. It is obtained at the tax office in Greece.
AMKA is a social insurance number and is required for health insurance registration and legal work. It is obtained at the relevant services in Greece (KEP or e-EFKA).
Once you have your AFM and AMKA, the employer registers you in the Greek employment system (ERGANI). This step makes your work officially registered.
If you plan to stay in Greece for more than 3 months, you need to register your residence. Typically required: valid ID, proof of employment (contract or employer confirmation), and photos. Registration is done at the police station and is free of charge.
Before coming to Greece, it is recommended to have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from Bulgaria until you are fully enrolled in the Greek system. You will also need a bank account to receive your salary.
For Bulgarian candidates the process is simpler as there is no visa, but administration does exist and is handled after arriving in Greece. The most common order of steps: agreement with employer → arrival in Greece → AFM → AMKA → employment registration → (if needed) residence registration.
